Social Justice And Racism?

Racism in the mainstream??

Racism has become such a known topic it has affected people of all shades. Racism is a thought that occurs in the mind that makes you believe that everybody should be the same when we are not. In the world today we see a lot of mainstreams discuss the topic. Matter fact racism has been popping up a lot in the news, newspapers, magazines, the internet, and occurring in day to day environment. I believe that racism is a very important issue that should continue to be addressed and not ignored. One mainstream article that talks about the issue would be “Global issues racism” that discusses the issues that affect us all. While I have another article by the “New York post racism”, that covers the main big racism issues that have occurred over the course of a few days or weeks. The two mainstream websites that I pulled should help better understand the issue and how it’s not just happening with the common things we hear about today. It’s occurring everywhere and many mainstream companies are covering the issues. The mainstream websites explain how it’s occurring in schools, online, and in everyday work environments.

The article from global issues by Anup Shah, she discusses the issue in different counties along with the different places it can occur. She breaks down the topic by really gathering information. Shah starts by discussing the issues that are occurring in Africa right now. The author stated “In Zimbabwe, there has been increasing racism against the white farmers, due to poverty and lack of land ownership by Africans. South Africa until recently suffered from Apartheid, which legally segregated the African population from the Europeans.” She made this statement to inform us of the things that are occurring not only to blacks but also to white farmers. This goes to explain how racism can be against any race or gender. To further explain “Apartheid” is a discrimination of a certain race that occurred during the 1940’s in Africa. To back up Shah article more she even goes into more details and talks about the things that are happening in Asia. Shah states “until 2003, Malaysia enforced discriminatory laws limiting access to university education for Chinese students who are citizens by birth of Malaysia, and many other laws explicitly favoring bumiputras (Malays) remain in force.” The statement above just goes to explain how racism is even occurring in schools still till this day. This was an unknown fact to me and it’s crazy to think that in some schools in Asia it’s still occurring. Shah even talks about the Gypsies and states “In Europe they have been persecuted to a similar extent as the Jews throughout history, including World War II and even now they are largely mistreated or ignored.” The statement from the author explains how if we don’t address certain things then history itself will repeat, such as racism towards a certain group of people. This even goes to explain how we can’t continue to turn the other cheek to things like this. The author goes deeper into her article and talks about racism on the internet, she states “the World Wide Web is a great proponent for the ideals of free speech, it can also be a breeding ground harboring hatred.” The given statement shows how the internet can be a very important, helpful, and even interesting place but it can also be hateful. The internet can be a place that leads to online bullying due to your race. Overall, the article from the global issue website explains how racism is a much bigger issue. The mainstream “Global issues” explains how racism is still occurring till this day everywhere around us, such as in schools, online, and environments such as farmlands.

Another very important mainstream website would be the “New York post”, this mainstream is covered by all kinds of authors. A prime example would be an article written by Joh Lea “Black model refuses to wear ‘racist’ monkey ears and lips at fashion show.” The article was geared towards how a model almost lost her job all because she refused to wear a certain type of clothing piece on stage. Lea made a statement along the lines of basically saying that black models male or females go through enough outside of the modeling world and should not have to continue to go through these things once they step on the stage. That is a very powerful explanation because it’s 2020 now people shouldn’t have to deal with these types of things while in the work environment, but they do… People should not have to go to work and do what they love and still get treated differently just because they may look different. Another author named Joshua Rhett Miller wrote an article called “West Virginia governor calls high school girls a ‘bunch of thugs’ after a heated basketball game”. In the article Miller explains how after a very tense sports game governor Jim Justice became very upset and shut down the whole game. Things may have got heated at the game, but there is no reason why a group of underaged girls should have been called thugs. Just because of a basketball game. Kids should not experience this at the end of the day, they should not have to face this type of hate at a young age. Overall, the examples given above go to prove and show how racism can happen anywhere and any place such as school or even the work environment. It goes to show how many mainstreams are discussing the issues and bringing light to them.

In general racism is an ongoing topic, the examples shown go to explain how racism is by far a tough thing that can occur anywhere at any place and time. Mainstreams are stepping up and discussing such topics. In the first mainstream the topic was about the countries and how racism affects people. While the second mainstream is discussing the different types of environments it can occur in. In conclusion the topic still goes unknown sometimes so it’s good to see the mainstream news site and papers saying something.
